1. Next Passionate Parenting Event Monday, March 15th - Rasing a Confident Child Self-efficacy – the quality of believing in one's own abilities - is a trait shared by confident children (and adults). It is success experiences, development of competence and autonomy that leads to confidence: not just a constant stream of praise. This follow-up talk by child psychologist, Katherine Fortier will focus on the life-skills that children need to face challenges with confidence and how we, as parents, can help them learn these skills. A two hour seminar, a practical guide for parents wanting to know more about this desirable quality for their children and relevant for parents of tots through to teens. Price: € 35. Venue: van Hogenhoucklaan 89 (Behind Bronovo Hospital) To register, click here to use our online booking form

4. English / Dutch children 9 – 16yrs Needed As part of our ongoing Early Child Bilingualism, we are currently looking for children growing up with English and Dutch who are between 9 and 16 years old. We're really struggling to find children in this age group and we would greatly appreciate it, if you know any families who might have children who fall into this category and who might be willing to take part, if you could forward this message to them. They can find more information about the project and sign up to take part at our website: http://ecb.childbilingualism.org . That's where you can also find updates about the project, with a report on the first results expected before the summer. Thanks in advance. Sharon Unsworth (project leader) and the Early Child Bilingualism team
5. Child & Adolescent Psychology Masters Students need your kids... Dear parents/caregivers, At Leiden University we offer a Master program in Child and Adolescent Psychology. In this program the students learn about the normal and deviant development of children. This program is very popular and attracts students from around the world.
The goal of the course is that students learn to work with normally developing children and to interact with them in a natural manner. For our Dutch students it is not difficult to find a young child to work with in their own family or at the school they attended while they were young. Our foreign students, however, have just arrived in the Netherlands and do not yet have the means to contact parents with young children. Moreover, they do not speak Dutch and thus need to interact with a child who speaks English or another language they have in common. The international students are from Greece, Israel, Australia, Canada, and the USA.
These students would very much like to get in touch with parents of children for the Psychological Assessment course. Our students have to practice their assessment skills by administering an intelligence test and questionnaire to a child age 6-12, and by conducting a short interview with the parents regarding the development of the child. Because this is a practice situation for our students, the results of the assessment (IQ) are of course unofficial and cannot be communicated. You or your child will receive 15 Euro for this session as a token of our appreciation. The assessment will be conducted in October 2009 at the child’s home.
Last year, several international families participated and the children very much enjoyed the interactions with our international students. For the students, too, it was a great experience: it helped them to acquire the skills needed to interact with young children, and it helped them to get adjusted to their life in the Netherlands.
Our students and instructors would very much appreciate your child’s participation in one or both assignments. If you would like more information about the course, please get in touch with Tirza Bosma (

6. Moms Night Out with Hearts at Home Join us on Tuesday evening, 27 April 2010 for quality mom time! This fun-filled event will feature two guest speakers, lots of laughter, plus a surprise or two. Sally Baucke is a professional comedienne, keynote speaker and emcee with over 15 years experience at keeping it clean, encouraging and hilarious! Sally will talk about today’s mom constantly being measured by her accomplishments rather than her relationships. Her workshop, Much to-do about nothing, will open your eyes and help you focus on the importance of who we ARE to those around us rather than what we DO near those around us.
Every mother wants to make a difference and leave a legacy, but in reality, most days we’d be happy if we leave “sane”. With humor and sincerity, Sue Heimer will share how you can make an impact in the lives of your children and for generations to come.
To register or for more information: http://www.hearts-at-home.org/ Venue: Van der Valk Hotel Den Haag-Wassenaar, Zijdeweg 54, 2245 BZ, Wassenaar. Please send an e-mail to
