When in Rome….
Another sweet Dutch tradition is to send all your family, friends, acquaintences, neighbours and colleagues, a baby birth anouncement card or “geboortekaart”.
These are traditional, because they are real, made of paper, and much more special than an email. And they are usually very beautiful: elaborate or plain, with your child’s birth date, time, weight, length and the proud family members names. Certainly, your contact details should be included, because after you have sent these out, you will receive a tidal wave of congratulatory mail and presents and visits (kraam bezoek).
One can order between 60 and 600 or 6 000 cards, depends on your enthusiasm and budget!
A good idea is to organise a “baby borrel” and set a date, when your baby is around 6 - 8 weeks (or when you expect to be out of pajamas and have the energy to put on some make-up). This is the opportunity to show everyone your beautiful addition to the family: let them "ooooh" and "aaaaah", count fingers and toes, deliver lavish gifts while you see 25 people in 2 hours. Have champagne chilled, some simple snacks, a few cakes and everyone will be happy.
A friend of mine works with a company (Popje) that makes beautiful birth announcement cards in any language, with a “touch of Dutch”. Some have that unique Holland theme, and others are dreamlike, beautiful, artistic. Best of all, they can be personalised with your photo, therefore, totally unique.
Imagine how your family and friends back home AND around the world will react when they see your baby was born in Holland, with a perfect card to celebrate it!
And, this card you will keep for life, as a record, a memoir, announcing the birth of your precious baby in The Netherlands.
Worth thinking about….
Other good advice from PP: ask for the envelopes early, before the baby is born. Start addressing them and putting stamps on. This is something you WON’T want to do (or have much time for) with a newborn baby.
Enjoy it, its sooo exciting making your choice!
