The Value of Family Values

What are values? In general, they are important and enduring beliefs or ideals shared by the members of a family or culture about what is good or desirable and what is not. Values exert major influence on the behavior of an individual and serve as broad guidelines in all situations.

We all become parents with very little know-how and training. Most emphasis for expectant parents is on pregnancy and labour B.C. (before children), but little prepares us for "life with children". Many parents wonder how the sweet, chubby baby that gurgles happily can change into a bellowing, tantrum-prone toddler, then armed with peer-fortified vocabulary, our school going kids can argue about anything from vegetables and jackets to hair-styles. Let’s be honest, its not all smooth sailing, and you and I need support.

What happens when your tot becomes a toddler then a teenager? We need to do more than guess our way through parenting and one of the ways to help is to recognise the value of solid family values through parent education.

There are many reasons to identify your values as a parent:

  • Identifying your values sets a parenting course for yourself
  • It helps your children know what to expect from you
  • It makes decision making easier because of your new set values.
  • You will be more consistent in your parenting and therefore you should be able to use your energy more efficiently.
  • Help you to be clear about your boundaries.
  • Knowing your values will also help you to understand your emotions.
  • Living in harmony with your values provides inner peace that allows you to move confidently through life.

I applaud your efforts to organise parenting workshops, it's certainly a very worthy initiative. I … see it as one of the most important preventative steps a community can make towards safeguarding and optimizing the well-being of children. Another great seminar, clear, practical, professional. It was excellent! Dr Sue Southwood, UK
